After plans fell through and being very short on cash, he decided to stay in London until he was able to pay his way home. Set in Soledad California in the 1930’s, when America was struggling with the problems of the Great Depression. Unemployment in America rose to 25%, jobs were extremely limited and hard to come by. We will write a custom essay sample on Of Mice and Men or any similar topic only for you Order Now The story follows two migrant workers, Lennie and George, who are trying to reach their â€Å"American Dream†. The story is based around the themes of friendship and loyalty, and helped me understand how strong friends can be. The turning point of the novel is when Lennie unintentionally murders Curly’s wife. This event changes the direction of the novel as it forces George to make an important decision. Throughout the story, Lennie’s mental incapability’s hinder George and himself, none more than when he kills Curly’s wife. Lennie’s strength is one of his major positive attributes for his work ethic and workload around the ranch, but also a negative trait due to his mental handicap, which renders him unable to control his strength. This is portrayed through the mice and the small pup he kills. Curly’s wife enters the barn quietly and tries to console Lennie after he has killed his puppy. She tries to overcome her personal loneliness of her loveless marriage by talking to the other ranch hands. But Lennie is cautious because he has a slight understanding that she is dangerous and not to be messed around with. But she outwits him and he begins to talk to her. He slowly starts to stroke her hair, harder and harder until she starts to scream. In terror of being caught by George, Lennie shakes Curly’s wife and breaks her neck. He realizes what he has done, and shows his loyalty and trust in George by running to the spot George asked of him. Lennie wants more than anything to please George but he has insipid, and has terrible decision-making. This reveals Lennie’s lack of intelligence, his vulnerability and his dependence on George. He provides Lennie with everything he lacks. He is a natural born leader, intelligent, worldly, and he shows his resilience by sticking with Lennie throughout the novel, and also showing his common sense, by adapting to make the right decisions for Lennie and himself when Lennie gets them into trouble. However George also needs Lennie’s physical strength, and work ethic at the ranch so they can maintain their jobs and work towards their shared â€Å"American Dream†. The strength of their relationship helps them to overcome the tough environment they are in and furthermore, helps them to overcome the loneliness of the time through companionship. Their trust, reliance and loyalty in each other give’s them hope in achieving their goal. But after this particular incident, the dream is finally shattered. George has to decide what is best for Lennie that shows his love for him. As a result of Lennie killing Curly’s wife, George kills Lennie. George realizes that Lennie will be killed by Curly, so he takes it upon himself in caring for Lennie. He steals a gun from the ranch, finds Lennie and kills him peacefully. George shows his love for Lennie by killing him, which was the ultimate act of kindness. Lennie had a substantial incapability’s that prevented him from reaching his dream, but he did have some admirable traits. His loyalty to George was paramount, shown through his work ethic on the ranch. The story has many themes such as having to make important decisions even if they are extremely difficult, but most importantly the relationship and the companionship between Lennie and George. How to cite Of Mice and Men, Essay examples Of Mice and Men Free Essays Of Mice and Men Topic Tracking: Friendship Friendship 1: Despite George’s impatience and annoyance with Lennie, and his remarks about how easy his life would be without him, he still believes that: â€Å"Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don’t belong no place†¦. We will write a custom essay sample on Of Mice and Men or any similar topic only for you Order Now With us it ain’t like that. We got a future. We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us. † Chapter 1, pg. 13-14. And Lennie finishes: â€Å"An’ why? Because†¦ because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that’s why. Chapter 1, pg. 14. The kind of life these men lead, moving all over the country, never knowing anyone very long, and having very little to call their own, is intensely lonely. Even if Lennie is not very bright, he still listens to George, and he remains the one constant in George’s transient life. For this George is grateful. Friendship 2: Slim comes across very differently than the other men. Friendly and understanding, he invites George into conversation. When discussing how George and Lennie travel together, Slim remarks: â€Å"‘Ain’t many guys travel around together,’ he mused. I don’t know why. Maybe ever’body in the whole damn world is scared of each other. ‘†Chapter 2, pg. 35. Slim is much more open than most of the men on the ranch, and a marked contrast to Curley, whose can only communicate with fighting. Curley will push his wife away, choosing to go visit prostitutes rather than work on their marriage, whereas Slim attempts to construct a relationship with George the first chance he gets. The men have a deep respect for Slim, and his opinion is the final word on any subject. Friendship 3: When George tells Slim how he used to play tricks on Lennie, beat him up, and generally abuse him for his own amusement, we get a very different picture of Lennie and George’s friendship. George admits one reason why he behaved such: â€Å"Made me seem God damn smart alongside of him. † Chapter 3, pg. 40. George takes very good care of Lennie, but he often feels anger at this burden, an anger which he takes out on Lennie. This fuels Lennie’s greatest fear–that he might have to live without George. Friendship 4: Candy’s sheepdog is old, arthritic, and blind–his life is not a pleasant one. Carlson and Slim feel these are adequate reasons to kill the dog. Carlson tells Candy: â€Å"Well, you ain’t bein’ kind to him keepin’ him alive. † Chapter 3, pg. 45. And Slim responds: â€Å"Carl’s right, Candy. That dog ain’t no good to himself. I wisht somebody’d shoot me if I got old an’ a cripple. † Chapter 3, pg. 45. The argument the men use to convince Candy it is okay to euthanize his old friend will come up again at the end of the novel when George must kill Lennie. The dog and Lennie have parallel stories, with parallel fates, except Lennie has someone who cares enough about him to put him out of his misery, whereas Candy wouldn’t get rid of his dog if he wasn’t forced. Lennie has what Slim wishes for–someone who loves him enough to know when he life would be better for him if it were over. Friendship 5: Candy tells George: â€Å"I ought to of shot that dog myself, George. I shouldn’t ought to of let no stranger shoot my dog. † Chapter 3, pg. 61. Candy feels that friends should look out for each other, and he knows he failed his old companion. Friendship 6: Crooks is so desperate for companionship that he is appreciative of someone who cannot understand him or converse with him. He understands now that this is the reason why George keeps Lennie around him. Friendship 7: Crooks reveals how easy it is to feel crazy when you are alone. With no one to confirm his reality, he begins to call it into question: â€Å"‘A guy needs somebody-to be near him. ‘ He whined, ‘A guy goes nuts if he ain’t got nobody. ‘† Chapter 4, pg. 72. Crooks’ lonely present is very different from his childhood, when he had his two brothers to keep him company, even sleeping in the same bed. Friendship 8: Curley’s wife tries repeatedly to assure Lennie that it’s okay for him to talk to her. Like most of the characters in the book, she also feels a need for companionship. Her self-centered and aggressive husband does not fill this need. Friendship 9: When George suggests they find Lennie and lock him up instead of shooting him, Slim has to remind George how terrible it would be if Lennie were locked in a cage, or strapped to a bed. Like the painful life of Candy’s arthritic sheepdog, life in prison or an asylum would be no better for Lennie. Just as Candy had to realize that his sheepdog would be better off dead than alive, so must George with Lennie. Friendship 10: After Lennie killed Curley’s wife, George was faced with a terrible choice-let Curley find Lennie and kill him, or kill Lennie himself. Unlike Candy, he will not let someone else shoot his best friend. He also will not subject his best friend to unnecessary pain. Slim’s sympathetic response is best: â€Å"‘Never you mind,’ said Slim. ‘A guy got to sometimes. ‘† Chapter 6, pg. 107. George lets Lennie die believing in their dream, though he himself must continue, knowing they will never reach it. How to cite Of Mice and Men, Papers Of Mice and Men Free Essays In 1929, tears swept the nation and gloom bestowed itself upon a once happy place. The Great Depression had started. People lost everything ,so many became migrant workers. We will write a custom essay sample on Of Mice and Men or any similar topic only for you Order Now Of Mice and Men, a classic novel written by John Steinbeck, emphasizes many sad themes, but gives us a good insight on what life was like in the 1940’s for many people. Although there are other themes, rootlessness, loneliness, and poverty are extremely prominent throughout the novel in many characters. Rootlessness is a major theme that motivates several characters to find a home; they seem to be constantly wandering without a real place to call their own. One character, who is prime example of this, is Curley’s wife. Although she has a home, the bunkhouse, she is unhappy with her marriage ,and thus she wanders around with no real purpose making her no better off than the other truly vagabond characters. Crooks is another rootless character with similar problems, although unlike Curley’s wife, he doesn’t have the bunkhouse to call home. Everywhere he goes, he’s pushed away and neglected. Crooks truly has no home and no way to escape that. George and Lennie , a traveling duo of migrant workers, are constantly wandering, but unlike the others they have each other. Throughout the story, George and Lennie are trying to just grasp onto some money so they can by a plot of land and truly have a place to call home. Through out the book there is a unmeasurable desire to own a farm. As you can see rootlessness is a fundamental aspect in the story. Loneliness is another major theme in Of Mice And Men ,but unlike rootlessness it is inescapable for many. Take Candy, an old ranch hand who thinks he’s going to be cut from his job, and whose only friend is his dog which later gets killed. As you might presume, throughout the story Candy is consistently lonely and eventually tries to hitch a ride on George and Lennie’s dream to own a farm. As George says on pg 13, â€Å"Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. † This demonstrates how ranch hands like Candy, especially ranch hands without a friend are lonely. Another character who is lonely is Curley’s wife. She married Curley only because she never got her letter from the Hollywood producer, not because she loved Curley. As a result, she has no relationship and no friends ,so she wanders the bunkhouse every day looking for somebody to talk to. She wants to escape loneliness by talking to people, but everybody pushes her away, even Curley, her husband. As she says on pg 89, â€Å"I don’ like Curly. I could been in the movies, an’ have nice clothes. † This shows that Curley was just her last resort option in her idyllic path to movie stardom. The last character affected by loneliness is Crooks. He is black and thus he is pushed away by everybody and even has to live in an isolated room in the bunkhouse. Because of this he pretends to push away people too even though he longs for their presence because he doesn’t know how to act any differently. In the book, Steinbeck shows that it is almost impossible for Crook’s to escape loneliness unless he escapes out of poverty first. Poverty is a prevailing aspect in the novel because it shows the hardships of the characters and attracts the readers. It also gives more harsh detail into what life was like for migrant farm workers. George and Lennie, the two main characters in the novel, are very impoverished and struggle wi getting o bas necessities s such as food, water, and clothing. Instead of dreaming to be ri, heGeor e and Lennie just want work for themselves and o have their own home. George and Lennie are also at the bunkhouse because they a so poor that they don’t have anywhere better to go. . Another character who is greatly affected by poverty is Candy. Candy used to be a young guy with a better possible futu but since Candy got older and had his hand cut off he’s afraid that he might not be abey to support himself. This is because he’s been slowly degraded to jb’s such as swamping ,cleaning, and fears that soon he’ll be cut from the job. The last character affected by poverty is Crooks ,the character that is truly the worst off in all of these themes in the novel. The sad reason why is primarily because he is black and thus people neglect him ,and gets a lot less job opportunities than if he was white. Poverty affects Crooks by pushing him into a corner even more. Poverty is just more of a problem to Crooks but I think that John Steinbeck is saying that if Crooks was not living ip Poverty, that he might be more respected or have a chance at a better life. In the later part of the sto,ry Crooks tries to escapp Poverty by hitching a ride on George and Lennie’s dream. How to cite Of Mice and Men, Essay examples Of Mice and Men Free Essays Novel Essay Author: John Steinbeck Novel: of Mice and men Question: Describe an important theme dealt with in the text. Explain why this theme is important. The first instances that Steinbeck uses a dramatic style of writing are in the images he portrays, and the use of sound and light to put across the images, which is shown all throughout the book. We will write a custom essay sample on Of Mice and Men or any similar topic only for you Order Now These two ways of creating and image for the reader are the two main ways of creating atmosphere in the book, so that the reader carries on reading the book, and doesn’t put it down. â€Å"On the sandy bank under the trees the leaves lie deep and so crisp that a lizard makes a great skittering if he runs among them† This quote shows the use of sounds, â€Å"skittering† to give the reader a clear image of what the shape of the leaves are, and what they look like, and their texture. Also from this you can also picture the other surroundings around the leaves and of the sandy bank. Also in the first another use of light comes across in the description, to give the reader, a clearer image of the surrounding area, â€Å"Only the tops of the Gabilan mountains flamed with the light of the sun that had gone from the valley† this again shows how the valley is â€Å"alight† because of the sun, and how it lights of the features of the surrounding area and, it maybe a very early warning sign, that a situation, may become heated, and may catch alight. Another quote is used to help the reader’s imagination, as Steinbeck’s dramatic style of writing, is again used â€Å"A water-snake slipped along the pool, its head held up like a periscope† Another feature of Steinbeck’s dramatic style of writing is that he uses metaphors, and also uses personification, and implies things in his description. From that quote, sound is used to describe the snake’s movements; â€Å"slipped† this builds a mental image of what the snake is actually moving and how it is actually moving. Also this maybe another sign of impending danger, or what’s about to come, â€Å"†¦held up like a periscope† periscopes are found on submarines, which are used as they are dangerous, and cause damage to the enemy, this may imply that George, or Lennie, will encounter an enemy and they may have to use force, or hurt the enemy to sort out the squabble/argument. The theme of loneliness is a very important theme dealt within the novel ‘of mice and men’ by John Steinbeck. Loneliness affects most of the characters throughout the novel. Candy is lonely as he feels separated from the rest of the younger hands at the ranch. Curley’s wife is lonely as she is the only female at the farm and Crooks is lonely because of his skin colour. They learn to cope with their loneliness through their interest in Lennie and George’s dream. Loneliness is a dominant theme which is used throughout the story, making it very important. Firstly, Curley’s wife is lonely as she is the only female at the farm. The character of Curley’s wife is used to show that women were considered unimportant and powerless. The men don’t want any trouble from her husband so they try to avoid her: â€Å"Ain’t I got a right to talk to nobody? † The workers avoid her as she is seen as nothing but trouble. She goes around, trying to seek attention from the workers at the ranch. Curley’s wife is lonely because she has a husband who doesn’t have any time for her. She ends up having her last conversation with Lennie, where she also finds out about the dream. Curley’s wife uplifts her image of being a tart, by acting friendly towards the other men. All she wanted was someone to talk and be able to converse with. In addition, Candy is an isolated and disabled man who feels lonely while staying with the younger workers at the ranch. This suggests the idea of candy being an unproductive citizen. The workers feel the same way about Candy, as they feel about his dog: â€Å"He ain’t no good to you and he ain’t no good to himself†¦ † Carlson’s speech about the old dog actually represents the fact that Candy is also ‘no good’, to others and to himself. This reinforces the idea of Candy being an unproductive citizen. Once the ancient dog is put to rest, Candy is left alone in the world. Candy joins the dream with George and Lennie in order to break free from his loneliness. He also makes two companions that will benefit in his time of need. However, this ends because of the death of Lennie. Lennie. m of George and lennie. being lonely, Candy joins the dream of George and lennie. Further more, Crooks is lonely because of his skin colour. Crooks is the only black person in the novel. He stays in the stable with the animals. Steinbeck aims to illustrate that crooks is considered more of an animal rather then a human. He is also the victim of verbal assault: â€Å"You keep your place then, nigger† Crooks is called a nigger which shows that he was a target for racial prejudice. The importance of this is to inform the reader about the political conflict between the ‘whites’ and the ‘blacks’. Crooks also offers to join the dream with George and Lennie to escape from his cruelty and loneliness. He later changes his mind because he believes that dreams never come true. To conclude, the theme of loneliness is very important in the novel. Some of the reasons of loneliness includes: being lonely because of age, discrimination against gender and being the victim of racial prejudice. Each of the characters affected by loneliness, try to cope with it, by becoming involved or aware of the dream. The fact that Curley’s wife, Candy and Crooks are all ‘invaders’ in the farm, also adds to there loneliness. Loneliness is or will affect everyone so we should always be prepared. How to cite Of Mice and Men, Essay examples Of mice and men Free Essays Revolver Is set In 1910 In a place mysteriously cold and desolate. How gig Anderson thought turn more and more towards a colt revolver, waiting to be used! Although It’s set In 1910 and 1899 It’s written In 2009 to show its still relevant today because of the mass shooting and major gun issues in the united States of America. There are numerous figurative descriptions of guns throughout the book. We will write a custom essay sample on Of mice and men or any similar topic only for you Order Now For example Marcus Sedgwick writes on page 106 † Wolfs gun hovered like a cobra waiting to strike† this is smashing simile and on page 75 he writes † Fragile as a ream† this is a metaphor not only that but is a sticking and shocking contrast. On one hand the gun is reflected positively, it is shown powerful and dangerous. On the other hand the gun is sensitive and fragile. Some descriptions are hard to interpret and are ambiguous. The revolver is mainly reflected positively and as though hypnotic to believe It’s positive. In addition to these descriptions, the characters wealth the novel have very strong views. Inner for example describes a gun as a â€Å"princess’s jewels in a case† this means that the gun is very valuable and is his pride. Inner loves guns and adores them and is his priced procession. On the other hand his wife and daughter Maria and Anne, they are absolutely against the ideas of guns they are extremely religious. Maria thinks of guns as the â€Å"Devils work† this means it is made the devil and only the devil would use such a thing. Anne is also against the idea of guns and knows its cruelty and dangers we find this out when she says â€Å"Explain both halves not Just the positives of the revolver† she knows that the gun is not Just pleasant and knows It can kill! Mr.. Salisbury supports their opinion, when he meets Elena in the bar and sees him with a gun he responds by saying â€Å"Don’t bring a gun too place like this or everyone will end up dead† this shows us that he knows that It’s a killer and dangerous. The novel begins with the death of Inner. This shows that gun never have a good outcome, Inner loves guns and is very passionate about guns but this passion lead him to his death. It was proven as he was dead at the beginning. There is a very similar matter for Wolff, as he is obsessed with guns and in Revolver you may infer that Wolff has experience with guns. This obsession had leaded him to his death, when the gun back fired. Marcus Sedgwick moral in the book is that guns are pointless and always lead to death. On the other hand Nadia, Anne and Gig were against the gun and Gig tried to resist the gun as much as possible. Their dislike towards gun made them all rich and successful. When they have the gold and their life was set. Marcus Sedgwick splits the novel Into eight different sections. Between these sections are quotes. Two quotes that I found interesting were â€Å"Mobs and murderers body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises. I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of our walks. † The first implies that the revolver is success and superior, with a gun you will be triumphal and you will rule. Walt Whitman in 1857 is obviously passionate and agrees with guns. The second seems to agree with the first quote, by suggesting that the gun is your companion and will always be there for you. It also praises the gun. These approaches would have been different to nowadays as the gun in the late 1800 and early 1900 guns and revolver were priced and for a common man would have been very helpful nowadays the gun has only one purpose DEATH. This is why the opinions would have clashed. In the end Gig turns to the revolver, he realizes that there must be another way. He left it all to faith he missed Wolff purposely. Wolff took the revolver and loaded it with his bullets and the gun had backfired and exploded his hand. In the end Wolff was sent to Jail where he died. The answer lies in the bible where they found the map to the gold. Marcus Sedgwick shows instead of relying on a piece of metal, rely in faith which is the strongest weapon. This leaves the reader feeling perplexed about guns. Teaching them it’s not the answer to your problems but the beginning of you problems. This is the aim of Marcus Sedgwick in this novel to teach teenagers that guns are the Devils work. In my opinion, Revolver leaves you feeling that guns are never the answer but the problem and you should always turn to faith. The overriding attitude towards guns in Revolver is contrasting but it’s shown mainly negative but dangerous and powerful. For those that thought of it as positive had a negative outcome and those thought of it as negative had a very positive outcome they became rich and successful. In revolver Marcus Sedgwick is condoning the use of guns in society. He shows gun only ruder and end up sending senseless people to Jail for their entire life. He says there are more things you can do than rely on a revolver. How to cite Of mice and men, Papers Of Mice and Men Free Essays This paragraph will be about the disgust and horror which is conveyed during chapter 3 of, Of Mice and Men during a fight between Lennie and Curley. Towards the end of the novel the fight begins where Curley ‘slashed at Lennie with his left, and then smashed down his nose with his right’, already this quote shows the power of Curley in this fight and the sheer harshness and magnitude of the whole situation. The word ’smashed’ used is onomatopoeia, meaning it’s spelt how it sounds, so the reader can almost hear the impact of the punch on Lennie’s face and are made to feel sympathy towards Lennie as he did nothing wrong and fear for what may happen to him at the hands of Curley. We will write a custom essay sample on Of Mice and Men or any similar topic only for you Order Now In addition ‘slashed’ and ‘smashed’ give alliteration to this sentence adding rhythm for the reader to read and helping the tension to further build up to the climax of the fight. These words the writer has chosen to use create clear imagery in the readers mind as they are bitter words and also are commonly associated with ‘horror’ movies which adds to the way terror is shown in this quote. ‘Lennie gave a cry of terror. Blood tricked from his nose’ is another quote conveying horror in this chapter. These derogative sentences are both short and snappy which demonstrates the action throughout the scene and are used by the writer to make a point and add impact to the novel, also they make a point and are building up tension for what is yet to come in the scene. The use of the word ‘blood’ could also have provoke a strong reaction on the readers emotions as it is a world strongly associated with pain and death. In addition the use of the verb ‘cry’ makes you feel great empathy towards Lennie as at this point you know about his learning difficulties and a huge man like him ‘crying with terror’ tells the reader just how fearful a situation he is in. The writer conveys his ideas by the language he uses and the structure of his sentences to convey horror and disgust throughout this scene. How to cite Of Mice and Men, Papers Of Mice and Men Free Essays 1. Before she appears, Curley’s wife has been a topic of discussion among the men in the bunkhouse. What do the ranch hands think of her? Are they accurate? Discuss whether she is a sympathetic, or an unsympathetic character, explaining why it is that you see her as you do. We will write a custom essay sample on Of Mice and Men or any similar topic only for you Order Now A. The ranch hands look at curley’s wife and think she is lonely, they perceive her as ‘floosy’ and a ‘tart’. When they discuss Curley’s wife over a game of cards they all agree that she will make trouble for someone; as George says, â€Å"She’s a jailbait all set on the trigger. They are accurate because when she shows up all she does is flirt with the other men. She is longing for attention. All she wants is someone to talk to, to converse with but in her mind the only way she can do this is by flaunting herself to the men just to get noticed. I see Curley’s wife as a unsympathetic character. She will do exactly what she can to do to get her wants and needs met. Whether it be loneliness, someone to talk to or just flat out attention from the men. I think she attempts to find some kind of sympathy with lowly regarded people such as Crooks or Lenny, even though she knows she should stay away from them. When she was trying to get the attention from lenny at the end and couldn’t she pushed for more making lenny stroke her hair. Lenny accidently stroked to hard and snapped her neck. Concluding what George said back in the beginning about her being jailbait. 2. Cite instances from throughout the novella where Steinbeck associates Lenny with small furry animals. Discuss what this association shows us. A. Lenny likes to pet mice for comfort. He seeks companionship in small furry animals. George is constantly taking the dead mice away from lenny, but lenny tries to keep it in his pocket. I think this is Steinbeck’s way of letting us know that lenny does not care about death and is more concerned with comfort. I think Mice represent the false hope of a safe space for Lenny. Like Lenny, mice suffer because they’re small: a mouse’s physical smallness leaves it vulnerable; while Lenny’s mental smallness is his undoing. I think that rabbits represent Lenny’s dreams and the impossibility of their fulfillment. Rabbits are a simple summation of everything Lenny hopes for, revealing his very simple thinking. Even when George first tells the story of the dream farm, it’s at Lenny’s prompting to tell him about the rabbits. For George, the farm is all sorts of freedom and happiness, but for Lenny, it is simply access to soft things. We know Lenny is excited about them because they’ll be furry and lovely to pet, but we also know that Lenny tends to hurt whatever he pets. This doesn’t bode well for him and he knows it, hence the large, scary, rabbit at the end of the story. That rabbit announces that Lenny isn’t fit to lick the boots of a rabbit, but that the bunny comes from Lenny’s own mind suggests that he knows deep down he’ll never have his dream. The fact that rabbits never actually appear in the book highlights the unfortunate reality that Lenny’s dreams can never materialize. 3. Despite the sparseness of dialogue and the minimal interaction, the minor characters in the bunkhouse seem well rendered and distinct. Select one of these characters, describe his personality and explain how his physical and psychological make-up contributes to the story. A. Crooks (named for his crooked back). He lives by himself because he is the only black man on the ranch. Crooks is a book guy and likes to keep his room neat, but he has been so beaten down by loneliness and prejudicial treatment of that he is now suspicious of any kindness he receives. Crooks character contributes to the story to help fit the time and setting of the era. Lenny’s brief interaction with Crooks reveals the complexity of racial prejudice in the northern California ranch life. Crooks is painfully aware that his skin color is all that keeps him separate in this culture. Because of his need to feel like he has to isolate himself and has suffered extreme loneliness, he gets a rise when other people feel lonely too. Like in the instance where he teases lenny, about George not returning. 4. The title of the novella is taken from a famous quote from the poet Robert burns: â€Å"The best laid plans of mice and men oft go awry. George and Lenny relay their plans for the future in a story told by George over and over, that becomes a sort of ritual for them in the novel. George’s story creates strong reactions in others. First, describe how two other characters react to the story. Second, discuss what function the ritual telling of the story serves especially in the final incident. A. They hope to one day attain their shared dream of settling down on their own piece of land. Lenny’s part of the dream is merely to tend to (and touch) soft rabbits on the farm. This dream is one of Lenny’s favorite stories, which George constantly retells. fter hearing this story Candy, the aged, one-handed ranch hand, offers to pitch in with George and Lenny so that they can buy a farm at the end of the month in return for permission to live with them on it. The three of them were happy but their joy is overshadowed when Curley attacks Lenny. He then, urged on by George, catches Curley’s fist and crushes it, reminding the group there are still obstacles to overcome before their goal is reached. George than discusses the dream with Crooks, who cannot resist asking them if he can hoe a garden patch on the farm. After lenny kills curley’s wife and George finds him, The two sit together and George retells the beloved story of the bright future together that they will never share. He then shoots Lenny in the back of the head, so that his death will be painless and happy. I think George retold the story to help lenny feel more at ease and to put him in his happy place before killing him. So that way when lenny died he didn’t know George wanted to kill him or did. His last thought was going to be of the story of them two together on the farm. Of Mice And Men How to cite Of Mice and Men, Essay examples Of mice and men Free Essays When you lose the person you relied on, if the person gives you material support, you will lose the ability to survive; if the person gives you confidence, love, and hope that makes you have the courage to walk through the difficult life, but he has been taken away so easily, you will be fallen to the marsh of despair and loneliness, and never get a day to see light again. People are not trust other people. Both Leonie and George are one of them. We will write a custom essay sample on Of mice and men or any similar topic only for you Order Now Leonie was like child. He likes to touch soft things around him but always brings harassment o them, he was so easy to get afraid and bathed his face in tears. He was just a child, but god gave him the strength that he cannot control, gave him duty that a child cannot handled. Everything around Leonie was so difficult, he cannot understood why he and George need to go around the whole country to find a job, he cannot understood why George was always get mad on him but never say that he going to leave him. Leonie cannot be independent, so he chose to rely on George, or actually, he must rely on George to survive in the dark age they live, the age of high-unemployment and starvation. Maybe he mentioned that he was relying on George too much and really felt sorry about it, maybe he just sat there and receive all of the help that George gave him and felt nothing. He doesn’t really understand what the thing he should do is and what’s not. But George does not care, he just spend his love, money, and time on Leonie selfless, because he knows, that they cannot live without each other. Many people think that Leonie relies on George too much, theft the reason lead him to death. Its right, but I think that actually, George will have a more painful life without Leonie than Lien’s life without George. The relationship between them is like a mouse and a man, mouse cannot get food without the man, and man will feed the mouse and get happiness from it. Mouse without the man will died on the street, the man without the mouse owns nothing except loneliness. Leonie and George are not just relying on each other, they also rely on a dream they have. â€Å"Someday—-we’re going to get the jack together and we’re going to have a little house and a couple of acres an’ a cow and some pigs and—â€Å". An’ live off the fat the Ian, an’ have rabbits†. It is just simple dream about life, a better life that can let them get reed of the instability and vagrancy life. The dream Leonie and George had that has a premise. â€Å"Because I got you to look after me, and me to get look after you, and that’s why. † They relied on each other, and lived in this model for a long time. Back to the day that aunt asked Clara George to take care of Leonie in the life after, what’s the feeling of George? They were just normal friends, they live in a easy life, but now he has to face a huge trouble. It becomes George’s responsibility, it’s too heavy for him, but it was the destiny that he must accept. Leonie doesn’t make George fell will at first, he likes to touch everything that was soft around him, it caused a lot of mice’s dead body, but through the time, George found out, that in his heart, it is quiet warm to take care of someone. The friendship between Leonie and George becomes more indestructible in front of the trouble, only death can separate them, they are the closest people in the world in their mind. We all know that George was a lonely kid, too. Maybe in his mind, although he doesn’t admit, he also relied on Leonie too, because its the only friend it left now. A long time of relying will becomes a precious love. I rely on my parents, because I need people to nurture me when I cannot earn my life myself, We stay together for a long time, because we formed love, the love between family members. I rely on my friends, because I need more people to play with me, to talk with me, to help me when I cannot solve problems by myself, of course I will do the same thing to them. We helped each other, sharing the ideas, it becomes friendship. Many people said that relying on other people means that you have lose your freedom, in my opinion it’s Leonie of right. When the people you rely on betrayed you, what will you feel? Very hurt right? When you want to help your friends, but you found out that you don’t have the ability to do that, you cannot carry out your responsibility, what will you feel? Relying on other people will bring a lot of hurt, like Leonie. â€Å"You never give a thought to George, he been doing nice things for you all time. When he got a piece of pie, you always get half or more in half. An’ if there was any ketchup, why he’d give it all to you. † It is the word that Aunt Clara in Lien’s imagination told to him. Leonie always receive too much from George, he knows that, but he has nothing to do with, because he always makes things getting worse. He can only cried to his imagination, tried to lie to himself that he tried to help George but not just relied on him. Leonie will die. When the first time read this book, I have mentioned that. Without George, he may died by starvation. He always gets into trouble, more and more, bigger and bigger. Every time, George saved him. In Lien’s mind, George is like God. He can save my life, he can talk with me, he promised to buy a rabbit for me, it is the thought in Lien’s mind. That’s the reason that Leonie said: â€Å"l never forget the things you told me, George. † At last, George used gun, shot Lien’s head and end his life. In my mind, Leonie was died in happiness; he died in a soft dream, not danger or fear. If Curler doesn’t trust George and came up himself to shot Leonie, it will be different. But cannot imagine the life that George has after that. How to cite Of mice and men, Papers

Should Teens Be Able to Buy Violent Video Games free essay sample

Well of course teens should be able to buy violent video games! There are so many reasons why. For years I’ve been so mad that we teens/kids could never buy that video game we all ways wanted, while your so called â€Å"friends† rubbed it your face about how their dad or there cool older brother bought it for them. Well enough is enough is enough. It’s time we teens be allowed to buy whatever video game our hearts desires. Now I know parents think â€Å"Oh my goodness this game is too violent! † but that all depends of the person. Ratings were created to tell you what age group they recommend the game to. If you’re the one buying it it should not matter all long as you’re okay with it. â€Å"Shut up and take my money† this is a quote from the extremely funny Philip J. We will write a custom essay sample on Should Teens Be Able to Buy Violent Video Games or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Fry for hit show Futrama, this quote was used because in the show fry hears about all the wonderful things of the iPod and runs to get on, before the sales clerk and even say anything fry says â€Å"Shut up and take my money. †. This is how it works with Teens, no one cares that the game has an E rating or an M rating, If the game looks fun they just want you to ‘shut up and take their money†. Yes there are some games out there that are very violent. Take Grand Thief Auto for example. Players can kill other humans, including police officers, or drive into pedestrians on sidewalks and in parks. Gang warfare, beatings, drive-by shootings, and bloody deaths are all shown in gory detail. Yes this is mostly likely violent to you and too much for your child but some teens are more mature than others, meaning they know not say, do, or replicate anything from this game. If you feel that your child cannot handle this then simple say they can’t buy it. This is most likely the reason parents don’t want young Billy playing violent games. There have been a lot of shootings in the U. S. These past years and most parents think that most of the of the teen shootings where inspired by violent gun games. This may have been the case in some cases but they are a lot of other things that can encourage a teen to want to do things like this. For one we have violent movies that can also give people ideas. For example the movie â€Å"The A team†, the movie has tons of explosion’s and chaos. In one scene A Rocket is fired at a building, blowing most of it up. So I watch the movies to. This has been Fun and Interesting to explain but I’ve reached my ending. I wish I could have gone into deeper detail but times are short. I also hope that you’ll take in what I said and see that video games aren’t that bad. This games entertain us teens and is a great escape from everyday problems. Who know a violent game might catch your eye and you might be the one saying â€Å"Shut up and take my money. †

How to Get Into Business School

How to Get Into Business School Not everyone gets accepted into their business school of choice. This is especially true of individuals who apply to top business schools. A top business school, sometimes known as a first tier business school, is a school that is highly ranked among other business schools by multiple organizations. On average, fewer than 12 out of every 100 people who apply to a top business school will receive an acceptance letter. The higher ranked a school is, the more selective they tend to be. For example, Harvard Business School, one of the best-ranked schools in the world, rejects thousands of MBA applicants each year. These facts are not meant to discourage you from applying to business school - you cant be  accepted if you dont apply - but they are meant to help you understand that getting into business school is a challenge. You will have to work hard at it and take the  time to prepare your MBA application and improve your candidacy if you want to increase your chances of getting accepted to your school of choice.    In this article, were going to explore two things that you should be doing right now to prepare for the MBA application process as well as common mistakes that you should avoid in order to increase your chances of success. Find a Business School That Fits You There are many components that go into a business school application, but one of the most important things to focus on right from the start is targeting the right schools. Fit is essential if you want to get accepted into an MBA program. You can have outstanding test scores, glowing recommendation letters, and fantastic essays, but if you arent a good fit for the school you are applying to, you will most likely get turned away in favor of a candidate who is a good fit. Many MBA candidates start their search for the right school by looking at  business school rankings. Although rankings are important - they give you a great picture of the schools reputation - they are not the only thing that matters. To find a school that is a fit for your academic ability and career goals, you need to look beyond rankings and into the schools culture, people, and location. Culture: Business school culture is an important factor because it dictates the environment. Some schools have a close-knit, collaborative culture; others have a more competitive culture that encourages self-sufficiency. You need to ask yourself what kind of student you are and what type of environment you are most likely to thrive in.People: You will be spending a lot of time with the people in your incoming class. Would you prefer a large class or small intimate classes? And what about the professors? Do you want to be taught by people who value research or do you want professors who focus on application?Location: Cost of living, weather, proximity to family, networking opportunities, and internship availability are all affected by the location of your business school. A big city will likely come with more opportunities, but it may also be more expensive to study in this type of environment. A small college town or a rural setting could be more affordable, but may provide fewer opp ortunities for networking and culture. Find Out What the School Is Looking For Every business school will tell you that they work hard to build a diverse class and that they dont have a typical student. While that may be true on some level, every business school has an archetypical student. This student is almost always professional, business-minded, passionate, and willing to work hard to achieve their goals. Beyond that, every school is different, so you need to understand what the school is looking for to ensure that 1.) the school is a good fit for you 2.) you can deliver an application that fits their needs. You can get to know the school by visiting the campus, speaking to current students, reaching out to the alumni network, attending MBA fairs, and conducting good old-fashioned research. Seek out interviews that have been conducted with the schools admission officers, peruse the schools blog and other publications, and read everything you can about the school. Eventually, a picture will begin to form that shows you what the school is looking for. For example, the school may be looking for students who have leadership potential, strong technical abilities, the desire to collaborate, and an interest in social responsibility and global business. When you find that the school is looking for something you have, you need to let that piece of you shine in your  resume, essays, and recommendations. Avoid Common Mistakes Nobody is perfect. Mistakes happen. But you don’t want to make a silly mistake that makes you look bad to an admissions committee. There are a few common mistakes that applicants make time and time again. You might scoff at some of these and think that you would never be careless enough to make  that mistake, but keep in mind that the applicants who made these mistakes probably thought the same thing at one time. Recycling essays. If you are applying to multiple schools (and you should), it is important to write an original essay for each application. Dont recycle your MBA application essays. Admissions committees can spot this trick from a mile away. And if you do disregard this advice and decide to recycle the essay, remember to change the name of the school in the essay. Believe it or not, applicants make this mistake every year! If you submit an essay to Columbia explaining why you want to go to Harvard, the admissions committee will peg you as someone who doesn’t pay attention to detail - and theyll be right to do so.Not Sharing. Admissions committees look through a lot of essays every year. This can be extremely boring - especially when the essays are generic. The point of the essay is to help admissions committees get to know you, so let your personality shine. Demonstrate who you are. It will help your application.Skipping Optional Opportunities. Some business schools have opti onal essays or optional interviews. Dont make the mistake of skipping these optional opportunities. Show the school that you want to get in. Do the essay. Do the interview. And take advantage of every other opportunity that comes your way. Not Retaking the GMAT. GMAT scores are important to your application. If your scores arent falling in the range for the previous years entering class, you should retake the GMAT to get a better score. The Graduate Management Admission Council reports that approximately one-third of the people who take the GMAT take it at least twice, if not more. Most of these people increase their score the second time around. Be one of those people.

A Study on College Stress Management

A Study on College Stress Management Going to college for the first time is an exciting experience for most. College students have opportunities that weren’t so easily accessible before going to campus, and they have the freedom to find themselves. While mom and dad aren’t there to hold their child’s hand anymore, the student is more likely to face new challenges, or similar challenges to those faced before. According to the 2015 National College Health Assessment, 30% of students reported that stress had had a negative impact on their academic performance. College stress can be caused by poor time management skills, pressure to excel, and lack of creating new relationships with peers. According to Coccia and Darling, common stress inducers could be caused simply by personal characteristics, social interactions and personal behaviors. Personal characteristics such as gender and age have proven to be predictors of stress. For example, females tend to have higher stress levels than males. Females have been reported to have greater concern with social and romantic relationships and have greater rates of social anxiety and depression than men of the same age (Catherine Coccia Carol A. Darling, 2014). In college, one of the first problems a student will typically face is learning how to manage their time in the most efficient way possible. Different class schedules and deciding the best way to spend their time outside of class is a very difficult task. Due to living by a set schedule for most of one’s life, the ability to have control over their schedule is a new experience for a student. Dr. Gregory Jantz, psychologist and author of How to De-Stress Your Life, says, â€Å"We actually create more stress from not being good time stewards.† Time management has proven to be a cause of severe stress in college students due to the inability to accurately factor in all aspects of the student’s schedule such as classes, breaks between classes, study and homework time, and even the time the student should plan to eat meals throughout the day. While at college, students feel a higher pressure to excel in all aspects of their lives, especially academically. This pressure can be put on the student by his or her parents or other close family constantly telling the student that they need to keep their grades up, go to every class, or by hovering. The student may also feel pressured to excel because they may be a first-generation college student and feel they must prove they deserve the ability to go to college and make their family proud. While the signs of this excess pressure to succeed can be beneficial to the student, it may also over stress the student. Dr. Turner from The Mayo Clinic suggests reaching out to others such as friends or family for help. Stress can lead to severe depression and if not treated properly, the symptoms may get too far out of control for the student to be able to handle the depression on their own. Symptoms of depression include appetite changes, defensive and quick mood changes, irritability, an d altered sleep patterns. Depression can be caused by stress and is a serious mental illness that can be avoided and helped if done properly. Dr. Turner recommends seeking help from a psychiatrist if the situation becomes too difficult to handle. This disease can become detrimental to one’s health if help is not sought out and the situation is not handled properly. As each person has his or her own way of taking care of depression, if the cause is not identified to its full extent, the illness may worsen. Relationships in college are a vital part of each student’s experience. As a student, one may feel detached and soon become depressed if social interaction is not a key part of his or her daily routine. â€Å"Something I hear repeatedly is students are impatient in college to form the friend network that they had at home in their communities,† says Dr. Nancy Stockton, director of Counseling and Psychological Services at Indiana University. The distance from peers may cause students to feel as though they are not worthy of friendship or romantic relationships, making them either shut themselves off from other students more or making them feel the need to reach out to their peers for help and acceptance. Elizabeth Scott from About.com said, â€Å"Knowing who is toxic to you and safe guarding a little bit [can] keep the stress from happening.† The stress she speaks of can come from â€Å"wishy-washy friends† who are supportive one minute and negative the next . Dr. Gregory Jantz, psychologist and author of How to De-Stress Your Life, says, â€Å"We actually create more stress from not being good time stewards.† Time management has proven to be a cause of severe stress in college students along with inadequate relationship building. Failure to release endorphins is a problem with many college students and people in general. To not release endorphins regularly can lead to built up tension and overstressed bodies and minds. The Mayo Clinic reports that exercise is one of the best de-stressors. Exercise releases endorphins, improves one’s mood, and helps one become more fit and healthy overall. When one is living a hectic lifestyle, finding time to schedule in a trip to the gym may be difficult. Luckily, more convenient forms of exercise such as yoga or gardening, can help stressed students to release the endorphins needed to lift their mood and reduce stress. These forms of exercise work and calm the mind at the same time. These activities also lower one’s blood pressure and can be very beneficial to one’s overall health and wellness (Erlanger A. Turner). A study was conducted by Sandra Lenz based off other journals and studies about college stress and why students are showing higher rates of extreme stress while enduring what is said to be the best four years of ones’ life. Lenz took part in this study so that college student, parents, professors and others alike could better understand why college students have higher stress rates as years pass and coping mechanisms that can be used to combat the stress. Sandra starts by discussing that many factors are present in the cause of stress and the way each student copes. With many other studies feeding the research that Sandra takes on, she was able to put together a well-rounded study. One of the first coping styles that Lenz speaks about is task-oriented coping. She refers to homework being a probable cause of stress in college students. The task-oriented coping means that a student is more likely to get the homework done before he or she takes a moment to consider how the stress is affecting them. The student will directly confront the source of his or her stress without beating around the bush. The second form of coping that Lenz described is called emotion-oriented coping, meaning there is a specific cause of the stress the student is facing. Instead of focusing his or her energy on completing the task, say it is back to the homework analogy, the student will focus harder on understanding and controlling their emotional state towards the situation and completely forget about completing the homework. Lenz says that the third and final form of coping is avoidance coping. Avoidance coping is when the student has decided to avoid the cause of the stress they are ex periencing all together. If the cause of the stress is homework, according to Lenz, the student will avoid the homework completely and this is how the student will handle their stress. Lenz’s study shows that while emotion-oriented coping is the most used tactic for dealing with stress in college, the other two forms she wrote about are not unused, just not as regularly used by the students as emotion-oriented. The results of the study that Lenz conducted show that students have different needs and how each student deals with his or her stress varies immensely. There are many causes to stress and college students have a higher rate of stress than middle aged workers. Learning to handle stress on one’s own time is a challenge, but there are endless ways to learn to help oneself. Exercise, yoga, taking time to pamper yourself and deciding in one’s mind how to handle stress are only a few of the options available for coping with this burden, but there are many more tactics to be considered.

The Negative of Internet on Education Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

The Negative of Internet on Education - Essay Example Students approach internet facility to resolve their queries, but are liable to be trapped in fallacies due to lack of understanding and knowledge. Research studies reveal that children seek internet as an aid to please their curiosity about all those ambiguous materials which are otherwise forbidden for their age, this exposure could be intentional or accidental, either by means of e-mail spam or through pop-up windows that may contain perilous stuff for them. Elders guidance is desired to keep a check on the use of internet by their ward(s) to prevent them from hoodwinks of internet, from acquiring erroneous conceptual understanding, and to protect their wards from online exploitation. Education Theatre Essay Example for Free

Education Theatre Essay â€Å"CAN you still remember your Grade I teacher? † This was once the by-line of an advertisement of one financial institution. This is also the base concept of the play â€Å"Ang Guro† staged by Stairs Production and Imagination Beyond Events Philippines at West Negros University Gym last Saturday, January 21. The musical play was written by occupational therapist Paul Ballano. This is his form of loving tribute to his Grade I school teacher, Mrs. Cecilia Resontoc, who was instrumental in making him pursue, work and reach his goals, despite all odds. As Paul fondly recalled after the curtain call, Mrs. Resontoc made him believe in what he can do, what he can achieve, and what he can become. The soft–spoken yet talented singer Karel Marquez performed the lead role perfectly. Comely, gentle yet versatile, Karel took in the part of Ms. Amelia Resontoc, a young high school teacher who has the knack of understanding and motivating her students. With her strong convictions, she encouraged her students to keep on going by singing â€Å"The Climb†, as she accepted each of their individual differences in â€Å"True Colors. † Izzy Trazona, one of the Sex Bomb Dancers, showed off her acting and dancing prowess as one of the talented yet late bloomer students of Ms. Resontoc. Sheila Asuncion, who plays the mother of Karel, not only played her role well but also belted out one powerful, heart–rending rendition of â€Å"The Prayer† together with the lead singer. Together with Charina Ramirez, Kath Jarabelo, Zac Celadania, Yab Aragones, Jake Duquiatan, Vida Masakayan, Jess Ibasco, Juddie Fe Suarez, Ahmee Galguerra, Owen Siy, Sweet Reyes, Jen Galope, Kiana Rodriguez, Armand Go, and playwright Paul, they composed the powerhouse of a cast which made the play a natural success. Moreover, the play’s universal theme on the crucial role that teachers play in the molding of the country’s young minds and the nobility of the teaching profession are great ideas which need to be brought to light. No wonder why the Department of Education and the West Negros University supported the staging of the musicale. The stage set and backdrop were to the minimum. Same with the costumes. But the plot thickens with almost real-life dialogues and scenes which every teacher and student or school administrator in the audience could easily identify with. The different personalities of teacher and students, and the varied circumstances which caught each web of each other lives provided the audience with hearty laughs, and flowing tears. The end of the play may have been tragic, but all good works do not go in vain. Especially that of the noble teacher Ms. Amelia Resontoc. Directed by Sweet Grace Ballano, â€Å"Ang Guro† may still have to undergo some minor refinements in stage blocking, but it has carved a better niche for itself in the world of stage plays. The cameo roles which some WNU dancers and students did in the play are also worth mentioning. But because the play is conceptualized and brought to different schools all over the country with no thought of a bigger profit, except to fulfill the writer’s dream and to bring forth the messages of acceptance, honor, love and understanding. It’s just quite sad to note that not everybody in the teaching profession or those who are enrolled in education courses have watched the play. But still, like a good book, or a worthy movie, the musicale â€Å"Ang Guro† has touched hearts and minds. And if all the student-members in the audience took leave of their seats to go thank their teachers in the audience and give each a warm hug, such is indicative that the musicale has brought its message across its audience’s hearts. Thus, warm kudos to the members of production and the cast of â€Å"Ang Guro† and to the wonderful people and sponsors in Bacolod who brought the musicale here. Well, what or who then is the â€Å"guro†? Probably they could be as specific as Socrates, Anne Sullivan, Marva Collins, Mary McCloud Bethune, Bel Kaufman or, from the namesake of the lead player in the musicale, Mrs. Cecilia Resontoc all of them having one thing in common: they were all teachers in their own time. Or in generics, a â€Å"guro† can just be a â€Å"he† or a â€Å"she† nameless or faceless yet gentle and wonderful beings who have long been forgotten but whose valuable lessons and strength in character will always be remembered by their students. So, at this point, can you now recall your Grade 1 teacher? Or even your other teachers? I hope you can. I would like to end with a part of a speech of John Schlatter of Cypress, California which I adapted. â€Å"Throughout the course of the day I have been called upon to be an actor, friend, nurse and doctor, coach, finder of the lost article, money lender, psychologist, substitute parent, and a keeper of faith†¦ I am allowed to see that life is reborn each day with new questions, burst of ideas and young friendships†¦ I know that if I build with love and trust, what I build will last forever†¦ I am a warrior, daily doing battle against peer pressure, negativity, fear, conformity, prejudice, ignorance, and apathy. But I have great allies: curiosity, intelligence, creativity, faith, love and laughter which all rush to my banner with indomitable support†¦ I AM A TEACHER. † Dear teachers, our hats off you. GOD BLESS.

Mark Twains The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - The Problem with Huck Finn :: Adventures Huckleberry Huck Finn Essays

The Problem with Huck Finn A person is a product of his or her society and environment. A person grows up learning skills and traits from the people around him. These traits influence and affect the person unconsciously for the rest of his life. For instance if a person grows up with an abusive father chances are he will grow up to be abusive to people around him. But what we learn may not necessarily be right (like what is mentioned above), but the person doesn't know that. What would happen to a person who spent this whole life living a certain way and then came to the conclusion that something different was actually correct. This would totally rock his world. Huck Finn has this exact problem. Huck was brought up in a world where slavery was normal. Heck even the local priest said the Bible said it was okay. What greater authority to have than Gods. But Huck is faced with a challenging decision. As he becomes more and more of a friend to a runaway slave and helps him in escape his entire moral standards are challenged. But this leaves him with an invaluable lesson. Huck meets Jim as they both are running away from their lives, for different reasons. Huck and Jim head down the Mississippi. But Jim is a runaway slave and Huck is faced with a decision to help or turn Jim in. Huck comes very close to turning Jim in as he struggles to determine what is correct and what is not correct. Huck throughout the story struggles within him to find out for himself what is right and wrong. He sees Jim's compassionate nature and Good-Will and realizes the institution that is slavery is not moral and is in fact the opposite. Huck even in one triumphant moment comes over his doubts about the morality of slavery. Huck stats "Alright then I'll go to hell". Huck in this one simple statement defines his opinion. No matter what the consequence of his actions, if it be Hell, or jail or whatever, he will not betray Jim. Huck in his struggle inside of himself comes to realize the right thing to do and in doing so becomes a man.

Analysing the results of the Private Finance Initiative (PFI)

This article considers the consequences of the Private Finance Initiative ( PFI ) and public interface in the United Kingdom ‘s public services. Along with briefly reexamining anterior research based upon the subjects proposed by Broadbent and Laughlin ( 1999 ) , this article suggests a control system need to make incentive to private houses in recent old ages.IntroductionIn these twenty-four hours and age, the issue of control and legalizing in authorities procedure is debated widely. The Private Financial Initiative strategy which has been given the power over the fiscal resource whether has been good strategy to cut down cost and portion the hazard with authorities. In the society, people who are working closely with implementing controls tend to hold their ain opportunism. By looking at the society as whole system that carried with it certain demands from assorted parts, different function has different involvement that must be fulfilled ( Emile Durkheim ) . Organizational maps are to advance integrating, stableness, consensus and balance.Key IssueWho is accountable? To whom? Is the PFI is the good strategy? Is that PFI independency? Government control power? Control lead to command?Private finance enterprise ( PFI )In 1992, UK authorities seeks private sector to assist out the populace sector development with big graduated table and economic sciences cognition. There are two elements of which private sector have involved: finance and operation. In this essay we focus on the private finance enterprise ( PFI ) which is a method of funding major capital investings that less affecting the public fund ( cf. Broadbent & A ; Laughlin, 1999 ; Broad Broad et al. , 2000 ) and that motivate the private sector to be more cost effectual in the design, building and subsequent operation of many public sector undertakings ( McKendrick and McCabe 1997 ) .The aim and intent of PFIThe PFI system was created with the intent to put in capital without enforcing revenue enhancements, raising debts or deviating cost from other precedences. It acts as an mediator between authorities and private sectors to offer better value for money than public resource by comm anding the undertaking over its life-time. By sharing answerabilities with private sectors, authorities can cut down the hazard and increase benefit to public ( Broadbent et al. , 2000, p 23 ) .Accomplishment of PFIIn term of power, PFI has Institutional power which relies on an external legal or regulative base from which power derives. They can hold the power to force providers and contractors to cut down the monetary value and better public presentation. They besides can make economic systems of graduated table by commanding Numberss of private contracts. PFI has proven to be effectual in the yesteryear for illustration, during 1992 and 2003, 563 PFI undertakings with a capital value of ?35.5 billion achieve fiscal near with most of them being decided after 1997 ( Her Majesty ‘s Treasury ( HMT ) 2003 ) . From 1995 to 2002, the one-year PFI plan has increased from nine undertakings numbering ?667 million to 65 undertakings valued at ?7.6 billion ( HMT 2003 ) . Estimate by 2010 it is around 200 undertakings with a entire value of ?26 billion will be closed ( HMT 2006 ) . Without the aid of private sectors, authorities would hold paid tantamount sum of fund to supply public service ( Gaffney et al.A BMJ.1999 ; 319: 116-119 ) .Accountability and control of PFIPFI was given the power of fiscal resources from authorities ; hence, they are accountable to authorities as an agent. In other words, they have duty to the work provided ( Gray, 1983 ) . Consequently, chief transportations finance every bit good as the right to specify and acc ount what is appropriate to agents. The PFI trades have been drying up. The figure of trades completed in 2009 was about the worst of 10 old ages period ( FT 2010 ) . The first ground is private sector houses require higher net incomes for anticipating high hazard. Therefore, PFI can non finish the trades with the limited budget that authorities set. During the fiscal crisis, the cost of adoption has been increasing. In fact, private sector involvement rates of borrowing are much higher than the authorities adoption because there is hazard of default. PFI ‘s undertaking has lower net income due to involvement refunds is higher than if it had been borrowed by the authorities. That means they increase the hazard oppose to authorities. Controling the beginning of finance, the agents are accountable for their determination as the one duty to execute a certain map. Accountability may be dictated or implied by jurisprudence, ordinance, or understanding or outlook. The agents have to bear the effects for failure public presentation as they are accountable for ( Hoskin, K. 1996 ) . Even though, Hoskin ( Hoskin, K. 1996 ) said agents have to take duty for their action, in March 2009, the planetary fiscal crisis created the trouble in support, theA TreasuryA established an Infrastructure Finance Unit in order to guarantee the continuance of PFI undertakings ( Timmins, N, 2009 ) . Furthermore, Government has bail out ?30m for a 2nd PFI undertaking make up the sum of a ?700m wasted in May 2009 ( Webb, Tim, 2009 ) . In fact, the trades from PFI are unreplaceable even though they need to be bail out. However, the PFI debt can non be refinanced without being punished ( Worcester News 2009 ) . There will be punishments to PFI for outdate and out budget. Consequently, PFI will take responsible for those losingss in forepart of authorities for punishments while authorities has to confront the duties to public society.ControlPrinciples have been given the power to PFI to command the finance resource as the agents and ‘Control is the procedure by which directors assure that resources are obtained and used efficaciously and expeditiously in the achievement of the organisation ‘s aims ‘ ( Anthony, 1988 ) . The issue is whether agents prove themselves good strategy or non. PFI claim to supply control system that can do good usage of resource such as: Legislation punishment act as a motivation for houses to complete undertakings on clip and within budget Private contractors are accountable for care disbursals there is motive for high quality building. Private sectors are better directors with better cognition of market and economic systems of graduated table. PFI can transportations put on the line from the authorities to houses. Firms receive net income as the wages for hazard pickings. PFI has chosen the high hazard undertaking However, the bureau theory defined ; there is the possibility that the agent ignore the wants of rule. The ground is PFI has their ain involvement and private information that authorities has no control. The authorities has no control over the twenty-four hours by twenty-four hours basic activities of the PFI, so that they can conceal the information from authorities. By secret contract with private houses they can profit themselves as mediators ( ICAEW-2009 ) . Furthermore, from interpretative position point, agent has their ain civilization to derive benefit as for private enterprise. Culture is something we portion and impact our thought and behaviour. It ‘s besides affected the work organisation, change the manner of construing strategy and reiterate the same everyday brand people wont and behaviour ( Smircich, 1983 ) . Unlike public sector organisations, net income motivation is the motive of private sector. They need to last, develop and be profitable ; hence, they need to carry through their demand foremost when they complete the undertaking given by authorities. Furthermore, PFI become obsolescence because people get used to the environment and status. Therefore, they are non cognizant of the un-certainty hazards. Believing their expertness and disregard the hazard lead to an impulse for the authorities bailout. It can be seen that power of authorities might non alter the civilization of organisation. â€Å" The mission to enforce a new ‘culture ‘ on public sector organisations via structural solutions based on market theory frequently fails to analyse the old civilization or the implicit in value constructions and administrative political relations † ( Gray & A ; Jenkins, 1995 ) . Control systems must be sensitive to organisational civilization. Those running counter to civilization are improbable to be successful ( Hofstede, 1981 ) . Therefore, the authorities has allowed the PFI to run as they have been. On the other manus, one of the cardinal statements is that authorities can command the bureau through societies and organisations force per unit area. For illustration, authorities can present statute law over term and status of contracts or status of economic system such as involvement rate, duty and so on. ( Broadbent 2003 ) As an agent PFI work under the authorities wants but non as they suppose to, hence, their system become obsolescence and incapable to accommodate. A undertaking bringing theoretical account which focuses less on advanced result and produces installations might non be able to cover with future alterations in demand ( James Barlow, Martina Koberle Gaiser 2008 ) . The money from populace has been wasted. Taking NHS as an illustration they have wasted ?350m a twelvemonth on outside direction advisers at their ain disbursals, while taxpayer wage one million millions to companies who gain benefit in the NHS from PFI.A ( Guardian Feb 2010 ) . In my sentiment, PFI is good strategy for public involvement as they have been supplying aid and support major capital investings, without trusting on immediate assistance from public beginnings. However as bureau theory defined, their work is non efficient as they proclaim because of obsolescence, their ain involvement and other forces ( Baiman1982 ) .GovernmentGovernment answerabilities & A ; controlGovernment has been given power by society through voting so they are accountable to public involvement. In the power theory ( extremist paradigm ) , authorities have gain tremendous power to command over the society. They have the ability to act upon behavior, change the path of events, victory over opposition, and acquire people to make things that they would non make ( Pfeffer, 1992 ) . As a rule of PFI, they have the power to command PFI, their public presentation and procedure. For illustration, in 2009, the authorities changes the accounting criterion ( FT, 2010 ) to accommodate with international accounting. Government politically, forms the manner to roll up more item of how PFI is treating, and should treat in pattern. The authorities besides steer the society utilizing ordinances and societal systems. ( Broadbent & A ; Laughlin, 1997 ) Although, as indicated above, PFI might conceal some information from rule, authorities has other manner to command their item provided with National Audit Office ( NAO ) . By supplying the auditing over PFI undertaking, they can cut down the disregards of bureau with private information. Consequently, authorities can command PFI public consequences as they please and force PFI to follow authorities wants. However, the authorities has control over PFI while the bailout has been increasing quickly. The ground is because their system has less effectual. Mark Mattison discussed that PFI has been provided its best value docket in term of clip, cost of capital and related consequences ( Mark Mattison 2009 ) . The possible ground is NAO is besides an agent so that the authorities might non be able to acquire clasp of PFI public study. An bureau theory â€Å" suggests that principals have lack grounds to swear their agents. The proprietor will happen to decide these concerns by seting nontrivial monitoring costs to aline the involvements of agents with principals and to cut down the range for information dissymmetries and timeserving behaviour † ( ICAEW-2009 ) . The authorities can swear in NAO and PFI study or they need to hold another company to look over. Additionally, authorities has less cognition of expertness than private houses. They tend to concentrate more on the work and politic instead than economic. Therefore, the program has failed to coerce PFI to take the utmost hazard with low return. Furthermore, private house demand to be motivated in order to execute better. By motivate agents, rule can have better consequences. Taking one mill, Hitachi used direct labour hours as overhead allotment base to make inducement for mechanization ; they cut down their cost and increase their end product ( Hiromoto, 1991 ) . From public point of position, the control over authorities was low because public merely can vote one time over 4 old ages for the party to take control. They gain control over the states so that populace has no control over twenty-four hours by twenty-four hours basic of authorities. The job of managerial and political answerabilityGovernment with the power of political as a consequence of their power base in planetary capital markets which was achieved through their function in the allotment of excess value ( Armstrong, 1987 ) . They provide public with context of control over PFI. Stewart ( 1984 ) suggests that managerial and political answerability as different degrees. A cardinal statement is that authoritiess merely accountable in a political, instead than managerial term. Consequently, authorities makes an increasing in ways of control over society. Because of their alone power in society, which their being is depending on how they exercise control over society, anything they do has a controlling result. In combination with a deficiency of twenty-four hours by twenty-four hours control by the election, which has power to vote these organic structures but without a power to order practical action, leaves authoritiess in a unambiguously powerful place. ( Jane Broadbent and Richard Laughlin 2003 ) Furthermore, authorities civilization is politic. They can non merely alter their behavior to managerial merely to command the system of PFI ( Hofstede, 1980 -1983 ) . The civilization of public sector was showed as â€Å" the mission to enforce a new ‘culture ‘ on public sector organisations via structural solutions based on market theory frequently fails to analyze the old civilization or the implicit in value constructions and administrative political relations † ( Gray & A ; Jenkins, 1995 ) .DecisionIn my sentiment, with the power to command PFI through many signifiers in the society, authorities makes them less incentive and mutuality on authorities and associate. Government is under low control of society, so they do non take the duty as a managerial but political.Discussion of the control systemIn the terminal, the staying inquiry is â€Å" Do command take to command † . Equally far as I am concern, the reply can be no. First, bureau job is a affair of struggles between ego involvements, therefore, bureau theory seeks to equilibrate the differences to find the optimum contract for an agent ‘s service ( Eppen, 1987 ) . However, the inquiry is can people swear the control of control ( Baiman 1982 ) . Because as NAO is an audit they still an agent of authorities, they might supply inaccurate study to authorities. Furthermore, the public point of position is NAO is besides under the control of authorities so that the study they provide can non be trusted. Second, the ground is stress make people less motivate. As the essay indicated earlier PFI tend to work less expeditiously. They follow the authorities order alternatively of making what they should make. That makes the system become obsolescence. Another alternate paradigm for direction control & A ; answerability is that people are dominated by the ideological superstructures with which they interact. The civilization of organisation depends on the outgrowth of shared interpretative strategies, expressed in linguistic communication and other symbolic buildings that develop through societal interaction. Such strategies provide the footing for shared systems of intending that allow twenty-four hours to twenty-four hours activities to go indispensable modus operandis or civilization ( Smircich, 1983 ) . Consequently, the alteration in control can take to a depression. On the other manus, the public organisations such as HMT, NAO and the Office of Government Commerce ( OGC ) have made recommendations to better the operation of the strategy. They bring the control to PFI coerce them to work with the punishments as an inducement to execute in clip and budget. ( J Laffont and D Martimort 2002 ) Contingency theory implies that different systems should be adopted in response to different environmental conditions and claims that there is no 1 best manner to do a determination ( Otley, D. 1980 ) hence, any determination that has been made irrespective of its suitableness at the clip, will still be capable to the environmental and external impacts, hence appropriate contingent programs needs to be established to take into history the hazards that are likely to originate in order to outdo brush the uncertainnesss lies beyond. As each method has its restriction we should be cognizant, Variable factors will impact the concern in different ways. Therefore, there is no best manner to pull off organisation when doing a determination.DecisionIn decision, the control procedure demands to be analyzed better before the authorities introduces new control procedure. It depends on the state of affairs and civilization of houses they control. Looking at different literature, I can reason that Government are to a great extent involved in political undertakings, but are bit by bit involved in direction and supplying private inaugural better influence and do informed determinations on strategic programs, as opposed to merely being tools in the procedure. Therefore, both their involvements align and they can work together towards the same end. This nevertheless does non work if a spread is evident between the two. Accountants will non take much notice of controls if they are non involved in doing informed determinations and covering with direction. In my sentiments, in current economic system the private inaugural demand to acquire motivate instead than control.
